WAMBUI KATEE

Catherine Wangui Wambui , better known as Wambui Katee , is a Kenyan singer-songwriter . She made a name for herself thanks to her covers of songs by popular artists in East Africa such as Patoranking, Burna Boy and Sauti Sol .

She sings mainly in Swahili and brings a breath of fresh air to Kenyan Afro-pop music. Catherine Wangui Wambui was born on May 1 , 1998 in Nairobi , Kenya . His mother, Annie Njoroge, is also a gospel singer in Kenya . She had never known her father until very recently when she was able to meet him for the first time 1 . She is the first of a family of 3 children.

She discovered music in her childhood, attending her mother’s recordings in the studios, and even doing her background vocals. During his spare time alongside his job as a barista, Wambui Katee began to record covers of songs by popular artists. His success will begin with the release of the cover of the single Suh Different by Patoranking (November 2018), which will quickly exceed the million views mark and currently has 2 million views.

The success she will meet thanks to her covers will make her the best cover singer in all of East Africa 4 , her fans will even give her the nickname “Queen of Covers 5  “. Following this craze 6 , 7 , she went on to cover popular singles in East Africa such as Kainama by Harmonize, Burna Boy and Diamond Platnumz (650,000 views on YouTube ), or even Suzanna by Sauti Sol (480,000 views on YouTube ).

She released her first single Mahabuba 5 , 10 in April 2019, which will remain a few weeks in the Top 50 of the Music Charts in Kenya 11. Her second single You 12 , which has a love story as its theme, was released in July 2019.

She released her third single Vixen 14 in September 2019. Following the releases of these singles, Wambui Katee would perform several times on the leading music television show in East Africa, Citizen TV Kenya’s 10 Over. She also toured Kenyan music radio stations to promote her singles as well as several stages 16 .

His fourth single Rambo 17 features renowned beatmaker Eyoo Seyil, who is known for winning a Kenyan award for producing the hit Vimbada.

Alongside music, Wambui Katee has an association raising awareness of mental health issues, suicide and depression. She was depressed for a while and she even tried to end her life 19 , 20 , despite the success she was having on YouTube thanks to the cover of the single Suh Different .

She has partly succeeded in combating this malaise and she now wants to share her experience to help people in similar situations who find it difficult to talk about it. To do this, she created a discussion group with young people to encourage them to express themselves and help them lead this fight against depression.
