The United States is a highly developed/advanced market economy. It is the world’s largest economy by nominal GDP, and the second-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP) behind China. It has the world’s seventh-highest per capita GDP (nominal) and the eighth-highest per capita GDP (PPP) as of 2022. The U.S. accounted for 25.4% of the global economy in 2022 in nominal terms, and around 15.6% in PPP terms. The U.S. dollar is the currency of record most used in international transactions and is the world’s reserve currency, backed by a large U.S. treasury market, its role as the reference standard for the petrodollar system, and its linked eurodollar. Several countries use it as their official currency and in others, it is the de facto currency.

China has an upper-middle-income, developing, mixed, socialist market economy, that incorporates industrial policies and strategic five-year plans. It is the world’s second-largest economy by nominal GDP, behind the United States, and the world’s largest economy since 2016 when measured by purchasing power parity (PPP). Due to a volatile currency exchange rate, China’s GDP as measured in dollars fluctuates sharply. China accounted for 19% of the global economy in 2022 in PPP terms, and around 18% in nominal terms in 2022. Historically, China was one of the world’s foremost economic powers for most of the two millennia from the 1st until the 19th century. The economy consists of public-sector enterprises, state-owned.

Japan is recognized as the country with the world’s most diverse economy, an attribute that the country has due to the sophistication of its exports. Originally known for its automobile industry, Japan had to adapt after facing stiff competition from its neighboring countries particularly China and South Korea. As a result, the country now focuses on the production of high-tech and sophisticated items such as robotics, optical fibers, biochemistry products, and hybrid vehicles. The country enjoys a favorable balance of trade with its annual exports exceeding its annual imports by about $58 billion. The primary export goods from Japan include motor vehicles.

Europe’s largest economy, Germany, is recognized as having the third-most diverse economy in the world. The commodities produced in Germany are ubiquitous, earning it the reputation of having a diverse economy. As an example, the country is among the world’s largest producers of wind turbines. The country has a favorable balance of trade, with its trade surplus of over $300 billion being the largest in the world. Germany’s annual exports are valued at about $1.401 trillion, the bulk of which is comprised of pharmaceuticals, chemicals, machinery, electronic and computer products, and motor vehicles. The country’s annual imports, in contrast, are valued at $1.104 trillion.

The economy of India has transitioned from a mixed planned economy to a mixed middle income developing social market economy and the largest South Asian economy with notable public sector in strategic sectors. It is the world’s fifth-largest economy by nominal GDP and the third-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on a per capita income basis, India ranked 139th by GDP (nominal) and 127th by GDP (PPP). From independence in 1947 until 1991, successive governments followed the Soviet model and promoted protectionist economic policies, with extensive Sovietization, state intervention, bureaucrat-driven enterprises, and economic regulation.

The economy of the United Kingdom is a highly developed social market economy. It is the sixth-largest national economy in the world measured by nominal gross domestic product (GDP), tenth-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP), and twenty-second-highest by nominal GDP per capita, constituting 3.1% of nominal world GDP. By PPP (purchasing power parity) terms, the UK constitutes 2.3% of world GDP. The United Kingdom has one of the most globalized economies and comprises England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. In 2020, the United Kingdom was the fifth-largest exporter in the world and the fifth-largest importer. It also had the third-largest inward foreign direct investment and the fifth-largest outward foreign.

The economy of France is a highly developed social market economy with notable state participation in strategic sectors. It is the world’s seventh-largest economy by nominal GDP and the ninth-largest economy by PPP, constituting around 4% of world GDP. Due to a volatile currency exchange rate, France’s GDP as measured in dollars fluctuates sharply. France has a diversified economy, that is dominated by the service sector (which in 2017 represented 78.8% of its GDP), whilst the industrial sector accounted for 19.5% of its GDP and the primary sector accounted for the remaining 1.7%. In 2020, France was the largest Foreign Direct Investment recipient in Europe, and Europe’s second-largest spender in research and development. 

The economy of Italy is a highly developed social market economy. It is the third-largest national economy in the European Union, the 8th-largest in the world by nominal GDP, and the 12th-largest by GDP (PPP). Italy is a founding member of the European Union, the Eurozone, the OECD, the G7, and the G20; it is the eighth-largest exporter in the world, with $611 billion exported in 2021. Its closest trade ties are with the other countries of the European Union, with whom it conducts about 59% of its total trade. The largest trading partners, in order of market share in exports, are Germany (12.5%), France (10.3%), the United States (9%), Spain (5.2%), the United Kingdom (5.2%) and Switzerland (4.6%).

The economy of Canada is a highly developed mixed economy, with the world’s ninth-largest economy as of 2023, and a nominal GDP of approximately US$2.089 trillion. It is one of the world’s largest trading nations, with a highly globalized economy. In 2021, Canadian trade in goods and services reached $2.016 trillion. Canada’s exports totaled over $637 billion, while its imported goods were worth over $631 billion, of which approximately $391 billion originated from the United States. In 2018, Canada had a trade deficit in goods of $22 billion and a trade deficit in services of $25 billion. The Toronto Stock Exchange is the eleventh-largest stock exchange in the world by market capitalization, listing over 1,500 companies with a combined market capitalization of over US$3 trillion.

The economy of Brazil is historically the largest in Latin America and the Southern Hemisphere in nominal terms. The Brazilian economy is the third largest in the Americas. The economy is a middle-income developing mixed economy. In 2022, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Brazil has the 10th largest gross domestic product (GDP) in the world and the 8th largest purchasing power parity in the world. In 2022, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Brazilian nominal GDP was US$1.894 trillion, The country has a long history of being among the ten largest economies in the world. The GDP per capita was US$8,857 per inhabitant. The country is rich in natural resources. From 2000 to 2012, Brazil was one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world.
